What Google Business Profile is
Google Business Profile (GBP) is a free listing that appears when someone searches for your business or for businesses like yours on Google. It's the card that shows up on the right side of Google search results with your name, address, phone number, hours, photos, and reviews.
Most local service business owners know it exists. Fewer understand that it's also one of the primary data sources that AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini — use when generating local recommendations.
Why AI systems rely on GBP
AI systems need to be confident about the businesses they recommend. Confidence comes from corroboration — when multiple independent sources agree on the same information about a business, the AI system can recommend it with higher certainty.
Your Google Business Profile is one of the most authoritative sources of local business data on the internet. It's verified by Google, updated by the business owner, and cross-referenced against Google Maps, Google Search, and Google's broader knowledge graph.
When an AI system sees that your website says you're a plumber in Chicago, and your GBP also says you're a plumber in Chicago, and your GBP has 47 reviews confirming that you do plumbing work in Chicago — that corroboration significantly increases the AI's confidence in recommending you.
A business with a well-maintained GBP and a well-structured website is far more likely to be recommended than a business with only one of the two.
What to put on your Google Business Profile
The completeness of your GBP matters. An incomplete profile — just a name and phone number — provides less corroboration than a fully filled-out profile. Here's what to prioritise:
Business category. Choose the most specific primary category available. "Plumber" is better than "Home Services." "Emergency Plumber" as a secondary category adds additional specificity. AI systems use your category to match you to relevant queries.
Service area. List every city, neighbourhood, or zip code you serve. Don't just list your home city — if you serve five surrounding towns, list all five. AI systems use your service area to determine whether to recommend you for queries from those locations.
Services list. GBP has a services section where you can list individual services with descriptions. Fill this out completely. "Water heater installation," "drain cleaning," "emergency leak repair" — each one is a signal that helps AI systems match you to specific queries.
Hours. Keep your hours accurate and up to date. Outdated hours are one of the most common causes of negative reviews — and negative reviews hurt AI recommendations.
Photos. Upload real photos of your work, your team, and your vehicles. AI systems don't directly process photos, but photos increase engagement on your GBP, which is a signal of legitimacy.
Reviews. This is the most important element. More reviews, higher average rating, and recent reviews all increase your GBP's authority. We'll cover reviews in more detail below.
The role of reviews
Reviews are the element of your GBP that has the most direct impact on AI recommendations. Here's why:
AI systems are trying to recommend businesses that are genuinely good at what they do. Reviews are the most direct signal of quality available. A plumber with 80 reviews averaging 4.7 stars is a much safer recommendation than a plumber with 3 reviews averaging 4.0 stars — even if the second plumber has a better website.
The quantity, recency, and content of reviews all matter:
Quantity — more reviews means more data points. AI systems are more confident recommending a business with 50 reviews than one with 5.
Recency — reviews from the past 6 months carry more weight than reviews from 3 years ago. A business that was great in 2021 may not be great now. AI systems account for this.
Content — reviews that mention specific services and locations are more valuable than generic reviews. A review that says "Mike fixed our burst pipe in Oak Park at 11pm on a Sunday" tells AI systems that this plumber does emergency work in Oak Park. That's a signal that can directly influence recommendations for that query.
How to get more reviews
The most effective method is the simplest: ask. After completing a job, send the customer a direct link to your Google review page. Most customers who had a good experience will leave a review if asked directly — they just don't think to do it unprompted.
Never offer incentives for reviews. Google's policies prohibit it, and it can result in your GBP being penalised or removed.
Respond to every review, positive and negative. Responses show that the business is active and engaged, which is itself a signal of legitimacy.
The relationship between GBP and your website
Your GBP and your website work together. Neither is sufficient on its own.
A strong GBP without a well-structured website means AI systems can identify your business but can't find detailed information about your services, service areas, or expertise. They may recommend you for simple queries but not for specific ones.
A well-structured website without a strong GBP means AI systems can find detailed information about your business but lack the corroboration that comes from an independent, verified source. They may be less confident in recommending you.
The combination — a complete, active GBP with strong reviews, paired with a website that has proper schema markup and dedicated service pages — gives AI systems everything they need to recommend your business confidently.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free? Yes. Creating and maintaining a Google Business Profile is completely free. Google offers paid advertising through Google Ads, but the organic listing itself costs nothing.
How do I claim my Google Business Profile? Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If a listing already exists (Google sometimes creates them automatically), you can claim it. If not, you can create a new one. Google will verify your business by sending a postcard to your address or by phone/email verification.
Can I have a GBP if I don't have a physical storefront? Yes. Service-area businesses — plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians who travel to customers — can set up a GBP without displaying a physical address. You list your service area instead.
How often should I update my GBP? At minimum, check it monthly to ensure your hours, phone number, and services are accurate. Post updates (photos, service announcements, seasonal offers) at least once a month — active profiles rank higher than dormant ones.
What happens if I ignore my GBP? Google allows anyone to suggest edits to a business listing. If you're not actively managing your profile, incorrect information can appear and persist. Outdated hours, wrong phone numbers, and missing services are all common problems on unmanaged profiles — and all of them reduce AI recommendation confidence.
